What is the wikileaks controversy all to do with?

I've been a little confused by the news reports about it.

Wikileaks is a website that published confidential documents of the US government. There were hundreds of thousands of documents that revealed the attitudes and thinking of many in the diplomatic corps as well as many others. Some of it was controversial and deeply embarrassing to those who hold positions of power.

It was this fact more than anything that saw the man behind wikileaks Julian Assange become the most talked about man in the news. There also seems to be an attempt to have him extradited to the US.

So in the final analysis it has everything to do with power. Those who control information have a monopoly of some kind. Until now.

It is confusing, especially with the misstatements by the media. Read the about wikileaks page on their website. Try wikileaks.ch because some of the links aren't working right on some of the other domain names.

Then check the bbc , the guardian and the huffington post for slightly more evenhanded reporting. Many other news sources have been getting some of the simple facts wrong. That's the beauty of the internet, you can check with other sources and double check the facts yourself.
