During ancient time the people had more unity, groups would reside together in a big family oriented life.
The latter was important since sharing was so very common, when another required some food or clothing the needs were generally met etc...
The latter also provided more vitality for religion since the parents would gather the children together and share biblical stories; the majority (Hebrews).
This type of infusion was very important since when the children would grow-up they would continue the beautiful process of learning/teaching through authentic stories.
Education in ancient time was somewhat vague, the majority probably could not read or write.
Today, the Bible is available to everyone via church, hotels, libraries, religious schools along with the internet and mail order; usually free.
Furthermore, one does not have to actually read the bible ~ study guides along with the priest or preacher at church provide an immense amount of biblical info.
Reading the bible is beautiful and may answer many personal questions but there are also many other ways to receive faith.
