For PTSD, a person has to be exposed to a great stressor - such as war or assault.

STS is a condition that results from over-exposure to "needy" people like folks that suffer from PTSD. Another term for it is "compassion fatigue" or "burn out". To suffer from STS, you don't need to go to war, you just need to be around so many people that suffer from PTSD that you begin to lose your ability to truly care for the situation.
