Do squirrels hibernate?

I saw a couple of squirrels in early winter but now I can't see any!?

Yes, at least squirrels native to places with cold winters do. However, not all squirrels do. Where I live (western Canada) tree squirrels are active year-round, but ground squirrels retreat into their burrows in late August or early September and don't emerge until the following spring. They are true hibernators - if you happened to find a hibernating ground squirrel you could pick it up and it wouldn't wake up.

They don't hibernate, they just stay indoors in bad weather.
