How can math be used to resolve problems and answer questions?

I have to write a paper about Problem Solving with this information and I don't know where to start...

    Problems and questions can be understood better if the principles of physics and engineering are applied to them. Math is a method of writing down these physical principles and a tool for exploring how these principles help to understand the problem. Math alone can't do it.

    can you get a 10 foot bed around a corner of a hallway that is 4 feet wide?

    the 'pinch' point would come when the bed is at the 45degree angle of the corner

    this would be the diagonal of a square with 4 feet from the center to any side

    so you have a square with 8 foot sides

    sin=opp/hyp

    sin45=8/hyp

    sqrt2/2=8/hyp

    hyp=8*2/sqrt2

    16/sqrt2

    11.314

    so you can get your bed around the corner

    sweet dreams

    :D

  • Some questions it can not solve.

    Like do you love someone.

    (but, humorously see:http://xkcd.com/113/)

    But math can be used to muse on possibility, check out creativity, and get some jokes.

    It can be used in surprising ways to resolve many kinds of problems in simple life

    (bank balance, averages, reciepes) as well as the sciences and engineering.
