any product that is used to kill anything is toxic and harmful to a point. you can use either one but it should not be spread over top of anything otherwise you, your kids and husband, your pets, and plants will got very sick and could die from being in contact with it. they are meant to be put into the crevices of the floor, behind and under stoves and other appliances where the bugs and fleas go so they walk in it and die, especially borax. it is done that way so that animals and people don't come in direct contact of the product. usually after a month of sitting it should be vacuumed up, but you should read the bottle for exact directions. my neighbor used hot shot which was like 99% pure borax. there are other products that are powders that are specifically for killing fleas, ticks, lice, and the eggs that can be sprinkled on the carpet, left for 24 hours, and then vacuumed up. its safer and you can actually put it on your pets and rub it into their coats where they can't reach with their tongues and then bathe them after 24 hours so it doesn't get irritating to the skin and absorbed through the skin. its made by Hartz, its called flea and tick powder or something like that and it can be sprinkled on the beds, couches, and floors. usually once or twice should kill them all off but can be used as many times as necessary if directions are followed properly.
