# If I walk 104 yards south, 127 yards west and 40 yards north. How far am I from my starting point?

Distance d = AD (the hypotenuse)

d^2 = 127^2 + 64^2

d = √(20225)

==> 5√(809) yds

≈142.21 yards

if you draw it out it becomes quite simple you go south 104 then west 127 then back up north 40. Draw a line from the start to the finish then a line from the finish towards the first line going south. you will see a triangle. one side is 127 the other side will be 64 since you traveled back up 40. now you just you the p - theorem to find your answer a^2 + b^2 = c^2
