There are lots of fun festivals that guide books overlook.
Lleida /Lerida has the Aplec del Caragol´´. A snail eating festival. There are usually a couple of good pop groups there to help dance off the excess food and drink.
Valls has a celebration of calçot (onion) eating. The onions are barbequed over vine twigs and eaten with a special sauce
Every town, village and aldea has a FIESTA!
Some are amazing. My home town has three if you count carnival.
Have a look at the fireworks, the drac, (dragon), th dancing and so on by searching " Festa major" on YouTube.
Smurfs are called barrufets in Catalan.
Caganers. One guide book calls them scatalogical. Hm!

The Vegueries are the catalonia regions and are divided in Comarques (equivalent to counties). The vagueries are not the official regions of Catalonia yet they are the real catalan administrative regions, the provinces (Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona are a spanish invention).
Catalonia is a very active country, the first destination in Spain for both tourism and bussiness (25% of visitors in Spain) and a similar % of the exportations. It is also the first industrial autonomous region by far. Catalan population is about a 15% of total spanish population.
