Am i too young to be busking (street performing)?

I'm almost 17 but I really want to try some busking in Portland. I play guitar and sing and my friend would tag along with a bongo or a bucket of some sort for accompaniment. Am i too young?

Also, would playing somewhat popular songs be good, or should i stick with obscure songs? obviously not songs heard on the radio but relatively famous bands like: The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Foo Fighters, etc.?

Do you people have to have everything handed to you?.. can't you make any decisions on your own? What the hell IS IT with people your age these days.

When I was 17 I took my graduation money and I went to Continental Europe with a ONE MONTH Youthrail pass, $1000 in cash and my guitar. I discovered BUSKING and spent my days playing on street corners and in subway stations and at night I played piano in bars for the tips and I was making such a good living at it that my one MONTH turned into 3 YEARS and the only reason I came home was, my parents threatened to disown me if I didn't go to college.

17 is EXACTLY the right age for busking.. but you need to check on the legality because I have heard that Portland has some strange laws about busking.. OR.. you could just go to EUROPE and complete your education.

For BUSKING you only need to know about 10 songs.. but you MUST perform them FLAWLESSLY. Busking crowds are VERY DEMANDING.. maybe it's because they are only at an arm's length.. but you HAVE TO PLAY PERFECTLY if you expect to get any money from your performance.

Bit of both. Find what people like and show your diversity off and on. You're not too young. Your age might be an advantage in getting some attention.
