Importance of population studies?

Population studies allow us to examine the success and failures of a group of people. We can study the decline or increase of a population rate and find out why it is/has occurred. Did something happen to cause it? Could it be prevented from happening again?
We can study populations and find out the percentage of employed persons, their occupations, their growth rate etc. in relation to the amount of natural resources, their geographic location, levels of education etc.
Once we study a population it is possible to hypothesize why is it the way it is, what are the key factors that allow it to exist (or not). We can detrminine future needs and trends in businesses by studying populations. (how much corn to grow, where to build new homes etc.)
