Do you have to be picked? Have an outstanding background in a certain subject? Anyone know?

You need an earned PhD. You also need a history of published research. Harvard recruits.

Like any other college, you need to earn a PhD in your field, and then apply for the job when it's posted (although Harvard and other schools make some exceptions to hire exceptional people when they are available). They easily get more than a thousand applicants for each job, so you need to really be at the top of your field - and that means research-wise, not teaching. Professors are hired based on how influential their work is and how much grant money they bring in.
