are you given a random donor's sperm?

Of course you choose the ethnicity. You get to pick a sperm donor and usually you know their medical history, as well as some school and personal background.

You just won't know their name and other personal contact information.

You get to choose your donor. You will get a history and a photo to choose by. While at this time, you won't get the donor's name or contact information, laws are changing and eventually, donors will no longer be anonymous - the child will be able to get the contact information when s/he is 18.
