hit in the eye by fast moving projectile?

Question

I accidentally hit my friend in the eye with a small piece of sandpaper launched via rubber band.(wasn't supposed to hit him). His eye was bloodshot and kinda hard to open and he was a bit dizzy. Other than being bloodshot it looked normal though. Nurse at school sent him home and made him go to doctor.As i wont see him until tomorrow i'm just curious as to whether he would have suffered anything majorly serious?

He could have permanent eye damage and your parents could be open to a law suit for having a negligent child.
