play what position you are the most confortable with and if theres too much competition for this position, work harder to prove yourself. It also depends of your skills and physical abilities. Some qualities useful for each position:

GK--> Height (tall), good kicking, agile, etc.

DEF --> Tackling, Heading, Anticipation, Speed, etc.

MID --> Passing, Playmaking, Stamina, Speed, Good ball control, etc.

FW --> Good shot, Speed, Ball contol, Finishing, Heading, etc.

As you can see, being fast helps a lot and you can have a very good shot, but you prefer to play in def, it really depends of you.
