Red Wine: Good for health?

I've heard that drinking a glass of red wine can have great benefits for your health. What benefits does a glass each day offer? Is there any certain type of red wine that produces more/better effects, such as merlot vs. chiante or shiraz vs. pinot noir?

    it lowers blood pressure

it has many antioxidants which may help prevent cancer and other diseases

the dryer red wines with high tannin levels would be slightly better than other reds, but they are all healthy for you.

I know a glass of red wine is good for your heart but I think one bottle is too much. In France where wine is part of life, the population has no or little heart related illnesses; however the alcoholism has an alarming number

    Hi,

I've heard great things of red wine, and it's a good excuse to drink it. It has many antioxidants like blueberries and it helps to keep your blood stream running and keep the clog out of your arteris. They even make pills of red wine for non drinkers, they're called Resveratrol. They even say it helps lose weight because of the reason that it helps remove fat from body. I'm not an expert but here's a website so you can learn more.

One small glass a day does have the health benefits already mentioned, but the body does not 'need' any alcohol, that's a fallacy.

The benefits come from the red grape skins as mentioned, not the alcohol.

I heard the same thing too but I guess too much wine will have sideeffects....like heart problem or high blood pressure, diziness etc. But I also read that just one glass is enough but not everyday. And the brand of wine, as long as it is pure red wine that should be enuff

Yes, you are right. The body needs minimum amount of alcohol per day. Moderate consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative against coronary disease and some forms of cancer. A Harvard study of factors that influence aging, as reported in the May 8, 2003, issue of the journal Nature, has shown that resveratrol extends the life span of yeast cells by 80%.
