I've seen them all over in Queensland near Cairns and Brisbane. Guppies were introduced about a hundred years ago in many areas of Australia for mosquito control. someone at the University of New South Wales may be able to tell you where in NSW you can legally collect some guppies. However Gambusia were also released at the same time for mosquito control and they have a competitive advantage in cooler climates, being able to withstand nearly freezing conditions.
