why do gases exert a pressure?

    From my understanding of Gas Law's it depends on the volume, But they exert pressure because how the gas particles bounce off of a contain's walls. And if the volume of that container is very little then the pressure will be higher because the particles will be bouncing off the walls more frequently.

    Boyle's Law:

    In 1662 Robert Boyle made the first systematic study of the relationship

    between volume and pressure in gases. Boyle's observations can be summed

    up in the statement: At constant temperature, the volume of a gas varies

    inversely with the pressure exerted on it.

    Example:

    Simple Pressure Related Applications:

    DRINKING STRAW: A drinking straw is used by creating a suction with your mouth. Actually this causes a decrease in air pressure on the inside of the straw. Since the atmospheric pressure is greater on the outside of the straw, liquid is forced into and up the straw.

    So if it were farting you were talking about, it would matter how much air and heat was behind it in your large intestine..get it? thats why some farts are louder and some are small weak squeaks, it depends on the amount of pressure created within the container, in this case it would be the intestine.

    We learn that gasses can contract or expand. When contracted, they may change into a liquid form and pressure is reduced. If the gas expands without being contained, there is little change in pressure, but if it is contained without dissipation, it will create pressure. The more it expands while being contained, the higher the pressure. Air is composed of gasses, but usually not being contained, we hardly notice the pressure, but it it is contained then we noticed the pressure. IE: an air compressor, inflated balloon, bicycle inner tube, etc.
