    The saying has been attributed most often to Ben Franklin, who is also credited with having said, "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

    More recent variations, along with their attributions, include:

    The earliest reference I can find to this quote is 1979. It was in the 5 Dec 1979 San Diego Union newspaper on page 39 and credit was given to Hartman Rector, Jr.
