Does Air Force One fly with a fighter escort in domestic airspace?

I just saw at very high altitude a pair of jets, one large and one small. At first I thought I was observing planes at different altitudes, but they were on the same heading, traveling at the same speed, and remained in the same position relative to one another the entire minute or so that they were visible. They were traveling west over Charlotte. I don't know of any other plane that would have a fighter escort.

Does anyone know if Air Force One flies with a fighter escort in domestic airspace? Is the President traveling today?

It's entirely possible, but there are other more likely scenarios.

A tanker 'dragging' a receiver from one place to another. It's a frequent occurrence around weekends and the receiver often flies alongside the tanker between refueling hookups.

Kodak moment - one plane taking photos of another or just observing it after a modification to the aircraft's fuselage.

According to the Washington Post, he doesn't take off from Andrews until this evening.

  • Sometimes, but Air Force One is normally preceded by a security plane and accompanied by one or more "Overflow Planes" for members of the press etc. when Air Force One is full.
