slot car electrical system?

well at school i am making a slot car that has a motor on a metal track and i am using copper strips hooked to a screw hooked to wire to the motor and i don't seem to be getting a steady flow of power causing the car to stop and go does anyone have any design idea to help with this problem or any idea to help performance overall any help is greatly appreciated:)

    oxidation i would say is the problem,copper isnt the best in this situation unless its plated brass would probably be better or even chrome plate but first you could try cleaning the copper and immedietly coating it with a penetrating oil such as WD40 or similar
