Lets get one thing straight here .. the youth policy has been a MASSIVE success. There are litterally dozens of young footballers coming through the Arsenal ranks year after year. Some are kept on and a now playing first team football, while others leave and become very good footballers at other premiership teams. So there is nothing wrong with the youth system. What has gone wrong is Arsenes footballing philosaphy. After the unbeaten season something changed. Under Arsene Arsenal always played beautiful, fast counter attacking football but he changed the teams style of play to total football. The difference between the 2 styles (pre unbetean season and post unbeaten season) is the defensive side of things. When a team plays counter attacking football they need a physical strong spine, ie keown, adams, viera, petite, parlour etc etc. These guys battle, tackle, and would literally die for Arsenal. Then up front and on the wings you need fast, skillfull players ie overmars, henry, anelka etc etc. This worked a treat and Arsenal were awesome. Since the unbeaten season arsene changed. His new philosphy (total football) is something completely different. If you want to play total football you need 10 outfield players who are all techniquely amazing and who are all very very comfortable on the ball. The passing and movement need to be spot on. However, when you go with this style you can get caught out because, rather than having a keown and adams at centre half (good players that they were they are not pass and move guys) you need players like gallas, toure etc. And this is where the problem lies. These guys arsenal currently have are not in the league of the old rear guard - defensivley. If you want to play total football sometimes other things get forgotten about, like the art of defending. For me, arsenal are not far away from being an amazing team again. He needs to go back to pre unbeaten season way of thinking and get big strong defensive minded players who know how to win one nil and player fast fluent counter attacking football. He has the players in midfield and up front. Look at fabregas, walcott, nasri, van persie. These guys would shred teams on the break.
