How can I fix my hard drive?

I recently had trouble with a few trojans which I believe did some serious damage to my hard drive. I noticed it when I ran the disk optimization function on Norton Antivirus and it crashed at the very end of the procedure. I try to run the auto repair function that's on my computer and it crashes part-way through. Would it be best to just wipe it clean or is there something else I can do?

A virus won't do physical damage to the HDD. You may have bad sectors on it though...

Click Start (then Run in XP) and type (in the search bar in Vista/Win 7)

    CMD

Hit Enter/Return, then type this in the command window

    chkdsk /r

Hit Enter/Return, tap 'Y' then Enter/Return to run the scan at the next boot, type EXIT and re-start.
