how can you tell the difference between a soft iron and hard iron?

i am doin a physics project and i need to use soft ron. I found nails in my house but i dont know if its hard or soft. And where can i buy soft iron in toronto?

    If you buy the largest commonly available nail, it will be soft iron (untempered). This is a good choice to make an electromagnet, for example.
