How to make word my default document reader?

I tried to open a document from this site http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/document form 1a but it does not let me open it because it says that paint cant read it? How do i change that to word? Please help i need that form or else ill fail biology thanks.

Update:

The file, if im not wrong, is a PDF file and i have windows Xp how do i open a pdf file

    .pdf files are opened by the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

    It is called file association.

    The settings for Files association are different depending of what operating system you have if you want to make the change permanent.

    There is a Second way:

    Save the file in MY Documents. Right click on the file and select Open With then select WORD.
