The Federalist Papers were published under the pseudonym "Publius," although they were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. The publication of political tracts under pseudonyms was standard practice at the time. The purpose was to avoid personalities and personal attacks upon the authors. Thus, a person disagreeing with an anonymous tract could not attack it by saying that the author was corrupt -- rather the person had to respond to the arguments made in the publication. Not a bad idea.
