.doc to .pdf conversion issue!?

I'm trying to convert a word document to .pdf format. I'm using a font that uses symbols in place of some of the letters. When my .pdf document finishes converting the symbols show up as the letter I would have typed instead of the symbol I need. For example, if "t" in this font made a smiley face - it would show a smiley face in the word doc, but a "t" in the .pdf. Anyway around this?

THANKS! :)

Update:

I'm just using some free online conversion website. Is there conversion software or an online converter that's free or cheap that anyone would recommend.

And it's a quasi-graphical presentation, so format is unfortunately important.

This would be a question for your pdf conversion program manufacturer. The ASCII codes get mixed up sometimes. If the format is not important, try taking to to text - then open the txt in word, then convert your pdf.
