They never should have remade it. Gene Wilder is the best Willy Wonka out there and no one could ever replace him.

I prefer Gene Wilder. IMHO Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has a slight edge over the new Tim Burton version.

  • Willy Wonka is definatley better. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is kinda weird and it's not the same. Gene Wilder is definatley better :)

Gene Wilder definitely. He played the role in a way that at first you believed that he genuinely cared about the children. Then he became more creepy as he showed very little caring for them when the bad things happened. Then at the end he showed that he did have a good side as he kept his promise when Charlie won. Johnny Depp's version just seemed to hate the kids. There was little depth to his character.
