You should read the Bran Hambric book series by Kaleb Nation, beginning with The Farfield Curse. Seriously, this is the kind of book that is perfect for beginners of all ages. They are tame and easy to read, but have the sort of gripping mystery that makes non-readers want to read. They are a series of modern fantasy novels, aimed at children ages 10-14 though I enjoy them and I'm 2nd year of college, and are truly phenominally enjoyable books :)

You can preview the first four chapters (plus the prologue!) at this website:

At what reading level? A few of my favorites have been The Secret Garden by Frances H. Burnett, Koyal Dark Mango Sweet by Kashmira Sheth, Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, The Time Travelers by Caroline Cooney, Bound: A Novel by Sally Gunning, 1984 by George Orwell, Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Jane Eyre, Zazoo by Richard Mosher, Copper Sun by Sharon Draper, and anything written by Donna Jo Napoli or An Na. Those are a few sweet reads I enjoyed in the past. There's a lot more but I cant remember. I think that a lot of those fit in the young adult category.

If you're just getting in to reading, maybe like the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, but some authors I'm really in to right now are Ned Vizzini, Ted Dekker, and Nicholas Sparks.

The Name of this Book Is Secret (Secret Series)

"Equal parts supernatural whodunit, suspense-filled adventure, and evocative coming-of-age tale."
