I wouldn't call him an auteur. Originally that term meant the directors who also wrote their movies, who took the whole creative control of the process. Ang Lee is a director, not a screenwriter. The movie that rocketed his career (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) was not his original idea, but was based on a book.
His style is more visionary, I'd say his most prominent feature is Eastern Observational Vision - as opposed to Western Active Vision (if you recall his Hulk, you'll understand what I mean, compare it to The Incredible Hulk).
