I didn't move to the UK until 1977, so anything before this is not very clear in my mind. I can remember though the Falklands War, the bombing of the Iranian Embassy, the fall of the Tory government after Margaret Thatcher and then John Major, the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. If I thought long enough about it I could possibly find a few more things. Hope this helps.

Why is Diana important? - tragic death of a not very bright ex-royal who was knocking about with a waster like Dodi Fayed was not one of the top 10 significant events. There are much more important things - these are just a random selection:
Introduction of Welfare state and Founding of the NHS
Britain's entry into the Common Market and Maastricht
Disbanding of the British Empire, (Rhodesia, India etc)
The Falklands Conflict
The Mainland Bombing Campaign inc Brighton Hotel Bomb leading to The Northern Ireland Agreement
Devolution of Scotland and Wales
Immigration and the Notting Hill Race Riots introduction of reace relations acts
Feminism and equality legislation for Women inc Equal Pay.
The Suez Crisis
Thatcher and the Anti-Union legislation - the battle with the NUM - the decline of British Industry and the Big Bang (deregulation of the Stock exchange) and change to property-owning democracy.

The Labour landslide win in the General Election just after the war ended.
The National Health Service was created.
Boeing 707 and 747 both into service.
Channel Tunnel opened.
The miner's strike.
The three day week- a result of the miners strike.
The Profumo scandle.
The Falklands dispute with Argentina. (may not have been in Britain but it affected a lot of people)
Same with the invasion of Iraq.
The European Union formed, as was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Scottish and Welsh Parliaments.
ITV starts broadcasting.
Mobile phones marketed.
CD records became available.
Death of Winston Churchill.
The Great Train Robbery.
Attempt to hijack Princess Ann in the Mall.
Kings Cross tube station fire.
I'm sure there are more - but that's a start

You have absolutely got to include the Suez Crisis in 1956, and the deployment of the British Army in Northern Ireland in 1969. These are far, far more important events than the death of Diana.
