Can a jazz savvy person recommend some good artist?

preferably the type of jazz they play in very old detective movies...or those very old romance Hollywood films, where they're reminiscing about the one that got away while they smoke their cigarette with elegance... think Casablanca...something that evokes deep sadness, memories of unrequited love, or emotions similar to that....something that Felix Mendelssohn would of composed if he would of been a jazz musician...something dark, mysterious, and sad...if there is any in jazz.. thank you
