Will the 21st Century be the time when the Abrahamic religions lose their vice-like grip on humanity?

I know to Americans that might seem like a distant, absurd dream, but the fact is that America is somewhat of an anomaly in the developed world. In most places where there are high levels of education and low levels of poverty, like Scandinavia and the rest of Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, religious belief is being increasingly pushed to the margins of society.

If the developing world is successful in the 21st Century in providing the crucial elements of education and the alleviation of poverty to its people, is it not possible that the trend mentioned above will tend to continue?

Another thing to consider is how much the world can change in a hundred years, the world is a vastly different place now in 2010 than it was in 1910.

THERE ARE MANY COMMENTARIES--on the date of 1914 fitting situations of urgency. A powerful scenario of perhaps the worst period of time in all of history without improvement of quality of life but LOSS of life, goodness & hope etc. in many ways:

The political ramifications of the events of 1914 are well known. The social changes it brought about are mentioned in Virginia Cowles’ book 1913: An End and a Beginning

. “The year 1913 marked the close of an era,” she writes. As regards economic consequences, Ashby Bladen, a senior vice president of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, writes: “Before 1914 the monetary and the financial systems were compatible. . . . If one takes August 1914 as marking the dividing line between them, the contrasts between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries are striking. In many aspects of human affairs there has been a complete reversal of trend. . . . One major reason was the severance of the linkage between the financial system and money with intrinsic value that began in 1914. . . . The breaking of the linkage was a momentous event. . . . 1914 marked a radical, and in the end catastrophic, transformation of that system.”

--“Ever since 1914, everybody conscious of trends in the world has been deeply troubled by what has seemed like a fated and predetermined march toward ever greater disaster. Many serious people have come to feel that nothing can be done to avert the plunge towards ruin. They see the human race, like the hero of a Greek tragedy, driven on by angry gods and no longer the master of fate.”—Bertrand Russell, The New York Times Magazine, September 27, 1953.

--“The modern era . . . began in 1914, and no one knows when or how it will end. . . . It could end in mass annihilation.”—The Seattle Times, January 1, 1959.

-- “In the year 1914 the world, as it was known and accepted then, came to an end.”—James Cameron, 1914, published in 1959.

-- “The whole world really blew up about World War I and we still don’t know why. . . . Utopia was in sight. There was peace and prosperity. Then everything blew up. We’ve been in a state of suspended animation ever since.”—Dr. Walker Percy, American Medical News, November 21, 1977.

-- “It is indeed the year 1914 rather than that of Hiroshima which marks the turning point in our time.”—René Albrecht-Carrié, The Scientific Monthly, July 1951.

AS TO Abrahamic religions having a hold on mankind, please note, without freewill--that is not the religion of the Bible.

-A list of worshipers of Jehovah as given in Hebrews 11-- strongly show free choice of Biblical faith in accepting the God of the Bible & his ways!

--Bible faith defined & practiced, please note:

(Hebrews 11:1-2) 1"Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld."

2 "For by means of this the men of old times had witness borne to them.”

4 "By faith Abel offered God a sacrifice of......

5 By faith E′noch was transferred so as not to see death, and he was nowhere to be found...

7 By faith Noah, after being given divine warning of things not yet beheld, showed godly fear and constructed an a.....

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed.....

9 By faith he resided as an alien in the land of the promise...

11 By faith also Sarah herself received power to conceive seed, even when she was past the age limit............"

13 In faith all these died, although they did not get the [fulfillment of the] promises, but they saw them afar off........."etc

There are many acts & true accounts of Bible faith throughout history, that connect with secular history!

“I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane [secular] history whatsoever.”—Sir Isaac Newton, renowned English scientist.

Religion belongs in the margins of society! A religious state can never be truly free because there will always be those who dare to dream of greater things.

It is true that one possible outcome will be the continued secularization of the world as a whole. However, the other possible outcome looks a bit more like the inquisition than anything else. This is because along with a rise in secularism, fundamentalists are also increasing in number. And if they have anything to say about it, religion will retake the classroom. If this happens, allow me just to say, we are royally boned.

The ultimate outcome will, I think, be determined by education. Ever notice most fundis have no clue how evolution works? Imagine if they all new! What a crisis of faith a lot of them would have.

    Lets hope for the best.

American atheists keep saying that religion is declining in Europe. I would like to know where you are getting your statistics from? In answer to your question, no.

"Another thing to consider is how much the world can change in a hundred years, the world is a vastly different place now in 2010 than it was in 1910."

That's the key - we're just one dark age away from a religious revival.

Oppression, ignorance, poverty - these things breed religion.

    Temporarily it will be so.

There will be a move towards Universalism (all ways lead to God, and we should all just "get along"), followed by the descent into anarchy, followed by the end of the ages.

So your thinking is that things will get better the more far-removed we are from the Lord???? Are you crazy? He's the One who keeps it all together........

You should be happy about His control

When Jesus returns and takes His own out of this world, and the antichrist reigns supreme, you will get your wish. You won't like it, but you'll be stuck with it.
