is it just me or are spiders getting bigger?

i was lying in bed last night when i something at my side i turned around and there was a massive spider walking up the wall i think spiders are getting bigger it was enormous are they getting bigger? Oh and this in northern ireland.

    There have been a number of these questions recently - it sounds like the Giant House Spider (Tegenaria duellica) has moved into Wales and Ireland, or at least expanded its range into areas it's new to. Spiders aren't getting bigger - I expect you're just seeing a larger kind of spider.

    Many spiders come to maturity in the late summer so of course they are at their largest. If you don't like spiders the good news is that most larger spiders are dead by early November - the males as a result of exhaustion and the females as a consequence of laying large clutches of eggs.

    Well the biggest one is the male goliath bird eating spider, can be as big as a plate :S

    i think they are the ones in my house are at least 1cm - 2cm longer :S
