Depending on radio and watts plus Terrain,Trees,Mountains,Weather count on 1 mile for the best ones. If your on a big Lake or on top of the highest mountain around.....then 2-3 miles.
So.....in rainy weather when your buddies go over the mountain in heavy tall trees don't count on these things for long distance. Use cell phones if service is available or use a GPS service. There are GPS units that you can follow your friends like a dog.Source(s): a

First and foremost -- Do not believe the claims on the packaging about how these radios are good for 5, 10 or even 15 miles..... Only under perfect conditions, like you being on a hill and a friend is on a hill 8 miles away with no obstructions like trees, no rain, other folks on the same channel, etc.....
If your in the woods figure 1/2 a mile thru the tree's.... and another thing.... Those stupid tones they make will announce to any animal in the area that you have arrived......

Depends on the manufacturer, power, size, antenna length, ect.

it will have reasonable range, but you will need headsets to keep it quiet enough when stalking.
