I too have been working on this question for some time. I believe I have made at least some progress. After actually reading a lot of the Bible again now at 49, since the first time I read any I was under 12. The stories mostly have the same themes, do good, be good in your heart, take care of your family, house, nation, be good and kind to others but don't let them take too much advantage of you. If God had a name that ment anything, perhaps it would be Consequence. I understand that, I think it is true. Now they somehow needed a way to "wash away sin" so people would not be paralyzed by regrets, sacrifices did that, carry this all forward and you have the whole this really good thing can die for ALL these bad things and make it all OK, but only if you BELIEVE it does. Yep, truth. It does if you believe it does, if you don't, you have to be able to suck up your own mistakes, learn from them, and change yourself. That's a tall order for a lot of folks. It's easier if some phantom spirit of good within us all named Jesus does it. Nevertheless, I still think the guidelines for life in the Bible, also found in other faiths, improve ones chances of a long, happy, fulfilling, successful life and a good launch for one's kids. So, really, I guess in the end, it gets you to a place you need to be to move forward without having to slog your own way through debilitating guilt, regret and the pain of wasted time. Everlasting life? I really don't know for sure, I do feel something incredibly magical about life, I always have. I wish our industry was not so destructive to it, I feel we are on our way down and out. I don't think waiting for Jesus to come back and save us is the best solution we could come up with.
