Most External Hard Drives, you are paying for mostly the External Enclosure, which is the case that they come in. Usually they will only post the specifications of the Hard Drive, but they won't put the name of or the manufacturer of the Hard Drive there. 7200RPM 16-32MB Cache seems to be the norm right now, but if you can get 64MB Cache, great. With 1TB+ Hard Drives, you will only be able to get 7200RPM Drives, which you can get a wide range of data transfer rates from, depending on the Manufacturer and how much time/ effort they have put into making it a reliable and fast Drive.

The HD doesn't have much to do with this as they are all similar.

The connection between the PC and the drive determines the max speed of transfer.

USB 2.0 Theoretical Max: 480 Mbps

    Fire wire is faster

    Esata faster yet.
