What is the major evolutionary advancement of the phylum chordata?

Not all four characteristics of the phylum, I already know those. In other words, compared to the phylum before it (echinodermata), what makes choradata evolutionarily superior?
Update: Ah, superior wasn't the correct way to phrase it... sorry! I was pretty sure it was notochord, thanks! Any other answers would be greatly appreciated!
