What kind of ukulele did Israel kamakawiwo'ole play?
I am looking to purchase an ukulele (preforably soprano or concert) and was wondering what kind he played. Also, what brands of ukulele (again soprano or concert and made of solid koa) would you recommend?

fretless,
I agree with Mike. If you're a beginner skip the high priced Koa ukulele and go for a simple Lanikai for starters. The LU-21C is great. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/lanikai-... It's the concert size and has a sweet mellow tone. Look at the reviews and you'll see a lot of people like them.
However, if you're set on a fancy Koa here you go. http://www.kamakahawaii.com/

IZ played several different ukuleles over his brief recording career. Most were concert or tenor size. He had a few local handmade ukuleles and there are pictures of him on album liners with an old mahogany Martin and a custom Kamaka.
For solid koa, I'd recommend a Concert or "Super" Concert from one of the big three "K"s -- Kamaka, Kanile'a, or KoAloha. I play a KoAloha Tenor. A Super Concert is a Concert body with a tenor length neck.
If this is your first ukulele, save money and get a nice Lanikai.

Israel Kamakawiwo main Ukulele was a Martin Tenor. You can see him using it in the famous video for "Over the Rainbow". He had this Ukulele strung with Low G strings.
