It depends on which 4-wheel-drive system the particular grand cherokee has. If it's the full-time system, then the answer is no. If it's the part-time system, then you should ONLY put it in 4-wheel drive when offroad. Never use the Part-time system in 4-HI or 4_LO onroad, as that can damage the drive system.

Grand Cherokee's in that year only had 2 types of 4WD. Quadra-trac II and Quadra-Drive. The Quadra-trac II systems have a small lever that you can pull up to put into 4WD high pull farther and you get 4WD low. But by default, the lever is pushed down flat, and that is 2WD. In the other case, Quadra-Drive, a small computer monitors all four wheels continuously, and only sends power to the ones that need it. There is no lever, and no way to manually change from 2WD to 4WD. It does it automatically. Technically this means that it's always in 4WD but realistically, it only sends power to the 2 back wheels unless it one or both of them begin to slip. This was actually a very high tech system, to the point that it will stop up to three wheels and only send power to one, if needed. Something that no other vehicle could do in 2003.
Hope that helps!

ask yourself if you really need a Jeep, if you are only gonna drive in 2 wheel drive.....you may be better off with a vehicle (car) that gets better mileage..
