Why did Buzz think he was real space ranger from Toy Story?

In the first Toy Story, when Buzz arrived to meet the toys in Andy's room, he thought that he was real space ranger and he didn't realize that he was just a toy.

It was all part of the gag. He had been programmed with the space ranger personality and took himself entirely too seriously. As he gradually learned he wasn't responsible for saving the universe he loosened up a little. In Toy Story 3 his personality was reset to that original personality, erasing the new personality leaving him as a deluded space ranger again.
