What happened to Armand Assante's character on ER?

I think he just faded out after a few episodes. He came into the hospital, offered Sam a job as an in-house nurse. She accepted. Not sure what happened there after that but the last time he was seen was after she was kidnapped by her ex-husband and ends up shooting him.

Armand's character Richard is the one who helps Sam by getting her a lawyer, and using his contacts to make sure Sam wasn't convicted of murder. I believe that's the last we see of him.
