How is Norway a socialist country?

socialism:

no currency- Norway has currency

no taxes- Norway has taxes

no private property- Norway has private property

no private business- Norway has private business

no production beyond needs- Norway produces more than just needs

all land and production are shared- Norway does not share all land and production

If you believe it is socialist because of social programs that you are incorrect.

"Social programs are not socialism."

Ask 10 random people what socialism means and all 10 will get it wrong. Some people actually think its everything the government spends money on even public schools and police officers. If that were the case than every single form of government would have to be socialist which simply isnt the case.

Source(s): My girlfriend grew up in Norway and I can vouch with certainty that Norway is not socialist, neither is Sweden.

Sweden and Norway are constitutional monarchies, I do not know about Denmark. All those countries are capitalist. Socialism and capitalism are not forms of government. Capitalism and communism are forms of economic organization of society. Socialism is a political movement that tries to achieve improvement of quality of life for ordinary people.

  • So... You're correct here.... However, if you look on that same website, you will see that we(i am a world socialist) do not view socialism/communism as something that has existed anywhere, ever. That means the USSR, PRC, DPRK, etc, etc, etc were not socialist/communist, by definition, but instead state capitalist as defined by the world socialist movement.

This seems to be the first time you properly represented socialism...

EDIT: Mckendric, socialism and communism are the same thing, in the marxist sense of the words. Marxists do not distinguish between the two.

You're conflating socialism with communism. Norway is a social democracy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy

"Socialism" is used nowadays as a perjorative term by the ideological right-wing for any and all government intervention into a "free" economy, due to distorting supply and demand, creating/perpetuating malinvestment bubbles, formenting crony capitalism, etc.. What's usually left unsaid is that sometimes intervention is necessary to fix "market failures".

Technically, if you cannot own the means of production yourself or as a shareholder, it is anything but a capitalist economy. Whether that is ultimately "fascist", "socialist" or "communist" is a all matter of government/ruling class control buttressed by democratic input (or not).

"The economy of Norway is a developed mixed economy with heavy state-ownership in strategic areas of the economy."

Its not socialist, but its governed by an SI party and has a mixed economy leans in that direction, more than capitalism.

If you think their success is due to the free market, you are delusional. Its because the state works for the people, not themselves or corporations.

Actually, their success is due to the production of oil. Free Market oil. All that money Norway spends is derived from the free market production by large oil companies. So, it really is an economy dependent on the Free Market.

It is NOT a socialist nation.

It is rumored that Norway is a liberal paradise, because they are heavily regulated and "provide" health care and education to their people, but it isn't a socialist nation. Remember, the people who want to believe that want to believe that everywhere that is good are socialist and everywhere that sucks is capitalist. You see how they try to state that DPR Korea and Somalia are capitalist nations.

Norway is a wreck, but it isn't because they are socialist. It is government spending. Their debt is 60% of their GDP.

You list is not one that describes socialism. That list describes communism. Both are bad, but there is a difference and communism is MUCH worse.

What you are describing is hardline Marxism, not the common interpretation of Socialism in Europe, which is more of a third way, between Capitalism and Socialism. A free market system with a safety-net.
