Is the Religion of Islam really degrading to women?
Well, there are tons of people who honestly believe that Islam treats women like crapp. well, im here to try and show you that you're wrong. im not trying to convert you, i just want to open your eyes. FYI, the passage below is not from me, i copied it off another website.
"Why is it that so many women who have been born and brought in Europe and America are willing to reject their 'liberty' and 'independence' to embrace a religion that supposedly oppresses them and is widely assumed to be prejudicial to them?" This is a question that I found on one of the sites while surfing around, and I found it an interesting question and which I'd like to draw this article around.
Can Islam be prejudiced to women, and yet appeal to women? Can Islam lower the status of a woman and still have more women embracing it as their way of life than men? According to an article written by Lucy Berrington in the Times Magazine (London) dated 9th Nov. 1993: "It is even more ironic that most British converts should be women, given the widespread view in the west that Islam treats women poorly. In the United States, women converts outnumber men by four to one, and in Britain make up the bulk of the estimated 10, 000 to 20, 000 converts, forming part of a Muslim community of 1 to 1.5 million "
How can the case of those women be explained?! Well, I could say that there are only one of two choices that one can decide upon. Either all those women who choose Islam don't know what they are doing or that they discovered Islam is not prejudice to them as others have yet to discover. New convert to Islam since September 11, US Navy petty officer, Heather Ramaha. "Islam gives us Elevation; not Degradation"
Before any other religion or system in the world Islam gave a woman the right to inherit, the right to vote and voice her opinion, the right to trade invest and improve herself financially, the right to own - buy and sell, the right to seek knowledge and have a good education, the right to work and has even gone further to oblige the males in every stage of her life, whether it was a father, brother or husband ... It's their duty before God to take care of her, to spend on her, to provide her with the food , clothing and shelter that she needs, to provide her with a good education, to protect her from anything that can harm her and to never hesitate to put their lives in stake for her if the need calls them to do so. "As a modern westerner with a career, of course I had to look into Islam's attitude to women - I couldn't be oppressed all of a sudden. But I discovered that it is pro-women and pro-men; in Islam, women had the right to vote in the year 600. Men dress modestly, women dress modestly; neither should flirt with the eyes, but rather they should lower their gaze. I think it's unhealthy to flaunt your sexuality - it attracts the wrong energy back." (MTV Presenter Kristiane Backer after being a Muslim) "Since I called myself a feminist, my early reading centered around women in Islam. I thought Islam oppressed women. In my Women's Studies courses I had read about Muslim women who were not allowed to leave their homes and were forced to cover their heads. Of course I saw hijab as an oppressive tool imposed by men rather than as an expression of self-respect and dignity. What I discovered in my readings surprised me. Islam not only does not oppress women, but actually liberates them, having given them rights in the 6th century that we have only gained in this century in this country: the right to own property and wealth and to maintain that in her name after marriage; the right to vote; and the right to divorce." (Karima Slack, an American feminist from secular humanism to Islam)
Karla, a young Blonde haired Blue eyed young American from Washington DC who is a recent convert to Islam said in an interview made with her: The main question people seem to ask, is "How could you, an educated American woman convert to Islam--a religion that oppresses women?" They are quick to try and equate the rights of women in Afghanistan with the rights of Muslim women everywhere. Basically, what I tell them, is that the Qur'an gives women more rights than the Bible does--in print. That was one of the things that first drew me to Islam. Unfortunately today, Islam is no longer the leader in women's rights. I had a choice--deny what I believe (i.e. that There is only one God, and that Muhammed is a Prophet of God)...or accept what I believe, but work to change the problems that exist within the Muslim community. I chose the latter.
Last but not least I would like to conclude by the blessed sayings of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him:
"It is the generous (in character) who is good to women, and it is the wicked who insults them."
"The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are those

The Qur’an thus states:
“And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them, and men are a degree above them.” (Qur’an 2:228).
Such degree is Quiwama (maintenance and protection). This refers to that natural difference between the sexes which entitles the weaker sex to protection. It implies no superiority or advantage before the law. Yet, man’s role of leadership in relation to his family does not mean the husband’s dictatorship over his wife. Islam emphasizes the importance of taking counsel and mutual agreement in family decisions. The Qur’an gives us an example:
“…If they (husband wife) desire to wean the child by mutual consent and (after) consultation, there is no blame on them…” (Qur’an 2: 233).
Over and above her basic rights as a wife comes the right which is emphasized by the Qur’an and is strongly recommended by the Prophet (P); kind treatment and companionship.
The Qur’an states:
“…But consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may happen that you hate a thing wherein God has placed much good.” (Qur’an 4: l9).
Prophet Muhammad. (P) said:
The best of you is the best to his family and I am the best among you to my family.
The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are those who are best to their wives. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 7396)

Only the ignorant make such claims. Islam has liberated women from its' inception during the time of the prophet(saw). What is going down at the moment is nothing but propaganda from those who hate the modesty that Islam brings.
As you have already done challenge all and any of the skeptics to show a woman who chose Islam by her own will who is being oppressed by her faith.
There is no where in the Quran or hadith that condones the abuse of women be they Muslim or otherwise. Where there are documented cases of Muslim women being abused it is by those who don't observe the sanctions imposed by Islam be they muslim or otherwise.
Despite all the nasty comments about Muslim women being oppressed in this beautiful deen they still come to Islam, so ultimately what does that say about the mis-appropriations being said about women being oppressed in Islam and the mentality of those putting forth this evil propaganda ?

The Koran uses sort of nice words about women, but in practice...
women of Arabia deserve to be degraded. Women of the West laugh
at and disrespect Muslim women who let men degrade them. Women
of Arabia hide behind covers so Muslim men won't feel the need to
rape them. How low can a woman get. Arab women are cowards.

Hmmm...areas of concern....
Movement and travel
An honor killing is defined as the murder of a girl or woman who has committed an act shaming or embarrassing her family. The family shows the community that it has reasserted control by killing the woman, thereby making "harm to reputation" a defense for murder. The Koran does not mention honor killings, and many Muslim scholars and commentators say that honor killings are a cultural practice which is neither exclusive to, nor universal within, the Islamic world.According to law professor Noah Feldman in the New York Times, Islam "condemns the vigilante-style honor killings that still occur in some Middle Eastern countries."
On the other hand, honor killings are justified under Islam in Saudi Arabia. Saudi textbooks state that it is permissible to kill adulterers. In April 2008, a girl was killed by her father for talking to a boy on Facebook. Honor killings are justified as a part of the culture in Jordan. In 2001, a bill demanding stiff penalties for honor killings was rejected by parliament on the grounds that: "it would encourage adultery and create new social problems." In 2005, honor killings accounted for one-third of all violent deaths in Jordan. There is no punishment for honor killings in Iraq.

Since throughout history almost all societies have been patriarchal (I would argue that the only exceptions are contemporary Scandinavian countries, whose governments offer generous provisions for maternal leave), any religion which does not expressly say that women are equal to men the way Christianity does are degrading to women.
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, NEITHER MALE NOR FEMALE, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)
If you can find a similar "proof text" in the Koran, I would take your argument more seriously.

SUGGESTION to western females: Our Muslims females are trying to restore your lost respect and dignity in the society by covering their beauty. Keep that in mind!!!
As a man when I see your precious parts that includes your hairs, thighs, chest, your body figure that doesn't sexually arouses me but in reality i lose all the respect for you I will never gaze at you for the second time because there is nothing else for me to see.
But when you have covered that parts of yours THAT puts me on an adventure, I want to see your hair, i want to see your leg, i want to see your chest............DON'T TELL ME THAT I am A PERVE. This is in all man nature it Doesn't matter how strongly you hide it, Its certainly is inside every straight man. By covering your parts that are jewels not to you but to us/man as well WE GIVE YOU FULL RESPECT and for that WE lower our Gaze. For me to see that jewels of yours I will only see it When I marry you in a respectful manner.
