What do I need to use a solar panel to charge a deep cycle battery?
I am looking at buying a 45 watt solar panel and a deep cycle 12 volt battery. I will be using the battery to run D/C lights, so I don't need a A/C power inverter. Do I need to get anything special to hook up between the solar panel to the battery to charge it, or do I just run the wires from the solar panel to the battery?

You should geta charge controller to keep the battery from overcharging and to keep the panel from discharging the battery at night. Something like http://www.altestore.com/store/Charge-Controllers/...Source(s): AltE Store - http://www.altestore.com/store/

You should buy a small charger from Harbor freight, you can not control it with some kind of small charge. small 10-20 amp charger can be bought on e-bay or amazon for about $15.00. At 2.5 amps from your solar cell will take forever to charge, A few tricks or common sense- Charge your battery with a car battery charger before you put the solar cell on it ,then do not let it go below 20 % i.e. 12.5+ is full charge dead at 10.5 volts so keep it about 11.5% or higher-this can be accomplished ith a half decent charger controller.
I started with the HF 3 x 45 watt panels, then I added two more sets for 9 panels and still only had about 135 watts total at 7-8 amps.
I am buying full 45 watt panels now-I have 18 of them plus my Harbor freight set up for a total of 900 watts @ 50 amps I can charge just about anything now.

You will need a voltage regulator to prevent prevent overcharging the battery and consequent damage.

About a 5 amp 13.8 volt zener diode

you should get a charge controller also, it will keep the panel from overcharging the battery
