Selective breeding. Dogs with the desired trait were bred with other dogs that had that same trait. Those dogs that didn't have long ears weren't bred. Simple as that. Drop ears have nothing to do with aiding hearing, it's all about improving the dog's effectiveness in tracking. Drop ears drag on the ground and helps gather the scent while a dog is tracking, which is why the hounds, spaniels, and other hunting/sporting breeds tend to have this trait.

Cavaliers and King Charles Spaniels, although toy breeds, still have the drop ears as they originally descended from working breeds and were bred down to their smaller, more lap friendly size.

they were bred this way to make sure the ears push the sent towards the nose while dragging them on the ground to make sure they can get as much of the thing's their tracking sent as possible, to be the best tracking/ hunting dogs, of course they do come with disadvantages such as infections.

also scent hounds have remarkably droopy ears. the ears work like a funnel to trap the scent around the face.

example: bloodhounds, beagles, basset hound, catahoula leopard hound etc.

  • longer ears help dogs hear better and when they drag on the ground it helps to pick up the scent in the dog's fur, hunting dogs use this

longer earred dogs are usually hunting breeds, because the longer ears generally help them hear better.
