在本句之中because 和if都是從屬連接詞,分別帶出兩個副詞子句(當修飾語),提供條件.

if she hadn't showed up in his life是副詞子句提供後面的子句he couldn't have been a professor and so successful in the society條件(向後面修飾)

because ...he couldn't have been a professor and so successful in the society也是一個副詞子句,但供前面的主要子句he felt grateful for all she had done條件(當修飾語)

你可以用數學的小括號和中括號來看兩個副詞子句的關係.if用一個小括號帶出一個副詞子句,這個小括號包在中括號內,由because所帶出副詞子句內.
