NO....the HSUS is NO LONGER a reputable organization.....less than 1/2 of 1% of donations goes to help shelter animals directly. Their ultimate goal is the same as PETA's......to eliminate pet ownership all together! As far as I'm concerned, they may as well be the same organization. I don't know how you feel about reptiles as pets...but the HSUS OPENLY states that "The reptile trade puts human health, the environment, and the animals at risk." They do not think anyone should keep reptiles as pets (including small and generally harmless species such as leopard geckos, corn snakes, and the like) and will support any bill or law that bans/restricts/controls reptile ownership of any kind. PLEASE do not donate to the HSUS! Send your money where it will actually go to good use....to your local shelters/rescues.
I would like to add that I do not own a pet store, breed dogs, or anything of the like that the naive HSUS supporters have claimed all HSUS naysayers to be. I am a pet owner and animal lover (I have dogs, cats, reptiles, rodents, fish...all well cared for and on the best food I can find them). I am very pro animal WELFARE....I don't believe animals should ever be mistreated....that doesn't change the fact that I believe the HSUS is corrupt and power hungry organization that has the ultimate goal of eliminating pet ownership alltogether. The original HSUS was a great organization...but it has morphed into another PETA. They certainly have and do support SOME worthwhile causes....but I refuse to support ANY organization that wants to eliminate animals as pets. Even without them openly stating they want to eliminate all pets...the fact that they openly state that they believe NO reptiles should be kept as pets is reason enough for me to refuse to support them in any way.
