Intermolecular force only happen between molecules with covalent bond.
substances with Ionic or metallic structure don't have it.
When you deal with covalent substances, first you should find the shape of the molecule and then you can easily find which bonding are intermolecular force while which are nonmolecular bonding.
Drawing picture is the easiest way to distinguish whether the molecules are polar or not.
