I have never found nor needed a distance calculator, but I often use a travel planner to find train times and time tables.

This one is easy to use and mostly gets you all trains in most of Europe:

When you have a connection selected, you can ask for details, and within the details a map option.

Next to this map there is a rough scale.

This is the best I know for travel distances by train.

As most/all travel planner work with the same database, I guess that non will give distances in km or miles.

There are a few sites that work different, for the UK you can use this site:

For travel info all around Europe, mostly from the UK:

    Railway maps, like these:

are not really correct, but might be enough for you.

If you need the distances for cargo calculations you best search for a planner on internet, contact a rail cargo company and or ask in the rail section of Yahoo:

For the best answers, search on this site

I would strongly recommend Via Michelin. It took the place of Shell Geo Star. It will not only give you the distance, but drive times, fuel consumption, and tolls. I used it during my 21 day drive of Europe, (Frankfurt-Prague-Brno-Krakow -Budapest-Bratislava-Vienna- Salzburg-Munich-Heidelberg) Only got lost once, because I stopped at a gas station and ended up driving back the way I came. I have to tell you the drive times were amazingly accurate, somehow they factor the long wait at some of the Eastern European borders. Enjoy your trip, I know that I did

    Just to add:

Open the German Railway travel service site Willeke has provided and enter the cities you plan to travel between. Once you got the connections click on "mobility check" and it gets you the distance in kilometers for most European connections..

Alternately check out the attached website. ..
