I want to do the same. Here are the main things you'll need to know:
Colors: Tan, cream, and beige are the main colors. For brighter colors, you can use purple, red, and blue, and sometimes black, but black and white are usually only used to enhance/contrast other colors in the room.
Textures: Tatami mats, although ideal for floors, are very expensive. Tatami mats are made of bamboo bound with black fabric, so a cheaper and much more affordable mat would have to be made of grass or straw.
Furniture: Platform beds (often have no foot or headboard, and are low to the ground and designed to keep balance). The furniture in the room is often dark while the linens are kept light and neutral, much like the walls and possibly door.
-paint the walls cream and maybe paint little floral designs in black, white, and tan.
-try to buy or possibly sew a rug that looks like it's made of bamboo and black fabric
-either cover your door with some colorful beads or remove the door and replace it with beads
-since Japanese beds are pretty hard to obtain, just use a mattress and light colored linens
(Sorry if I'm not much help, but this is the best I could come up with. I love the Japanese culture, so I'm at least hoping this would help a little.)
